Collisions in the drive train cause sudden high torque peaks that can damage or even destroy adjacent components. To limit the torque to a defined value, either the Slip clutch or snapping Overload Clutch to disposal. In the portfolio of Orbit Drive Technology the technical user will find a wide variety of safety clutches for a wide range of applications and wide torque ranges.

Slipping clutch for the protection of man and machine

Trigger of collisions in Powertrain can for example be operating errors or malfunctions in operation. It is all the more important that these suddenly very high torques are decoupled from the components. In addition to the aforementioned protection against collisions, torque limiters tasks are also deliberately used as part of the function for web tension control, braking and to protect people involved. For torque limitation, slipping clutches use friction linings, while disengaging overload clutches use balls.

Why it is so important to install a safety clutch

Slipping clutch and slipping hub transmit the torque frictional. If the torque set at the factory or set by the user is exceeded, the clutches or the respective torque in the slipping hubs will slip Transmission element like chain or gear wheel and thus limit the torque to this set value. In general, these torque limiters are also referred to as load-holding safety clutches.

The particularly compact safety coupling portfolio ensures safe overload protection in drive trains with a very space-saving design Securmax. Whether the application is a load-breaking overload clutch with an integrated transmission element or a load-holding torque limiter with a simultaneous displacementcompensation for direct drives - Orbit Antriebstechnik has the right drive solution available for this. We present the options below:

Backlash-free, load-separating overload clutch for servo axes

Even in modern servo drive concepts with electronics, load-separating safety clutches are often indispensable, as their mechanical separation and decoupling in the drive train is immediate. The backlash-free safety clutch "Securmax servo“ is designed for these dynamic areas of responsibility. For example, it protects working units of machine tools in the event of a product collision or snowmobile and servomotors against impacts and at end stops.

The torque transmission takes place with them via balls, which are pressed into recesses by means of a set spring force. At transgression of the torque, these locking bodies move out of their recesses against the spring force and thus ensure that the torque is interrupted. To ensure that the torque drops immediately in the event of an overload, the backlash-free overload clutches work with degressive disk springs. The program has now been expanded to include a range of adjustable overload torques from 0,7 to 1200 Nm.

The re-engagement after elimination of the overload situation can alternatively take place in a fully latching manner or synchronously re-engagement. The extensive delivery program includes torque limiters for indirect drives in Hub or cone hub design. Variants combined with torsionally stiff allow for direct drives Bellows or vibration-damping elastomer coupling, the effective compensation of radial, axial and angular Shaft displacements.

For applications where vibration is critical, designs combined with torsionally flexible and damping elastomer couplings are another option. Areas of application for these backlash-free safety clutches are, for example, printing machines, machine tools, servosmotors, Handling machines, packaging and filling machines. There are designs with progressive disc springs for robust applications.

Disengaging, hygienic and economical safety couplings

The program from Orbit Antriebstechnik contains a unlocking version of the Securmax Servo series. The solution for indirect drives are versions for the integration of transmission elements such as sprockets or belt pulleys. For an immediate drop in torque, these backlash-free safety clutches also have a degressive disk spring arrangement. With these release versions, the input and output are immediately separated in the event of an overload. The stored rotational energy can run out freely, the safety clutch that is released remains disengaged.

The torque transmission starts when the clutch is re-engaged by hand or using a device. The disengaging safety clutch is suitable for applications with high speeds, depending on the size up to 8000 min-1 and applications with high mass moments of inertia.

Overload protection with Niploy or stainless steel for special environments

In applications such as the pharmaceutical industry, petrochemicals or packaging machines in the Food industry the couplings must also be particularly corrosion-resistant. For this purpose, Orbit Antriebstechnik offers overload clutches in two options to select.

The Securmax Servo in Niploy version owns a high quality Surface coating in the form of a corrosion and wear resistant uniform coating. This coating is created in a chemical nickel plating process with a high phosphorus content. The Niploy coating resists most organic and inorganic media. The Niploy variant is suitable for use in the pharmaceutical or petrochemical industries.

Oldham coupling: potential of the proven coupling type

In packaging machines and filling systems in the food industry, the material stainless steel is usually specified or preferred. The backlash-free torque limiters in Stainless steel version are suitable for installation in these hygienically demanding and cleaning-intensive systems. The stainless steel range includes adjustable torques for these safety couplings between 0,8 and 540 Nm.

Space-saving torque limiter with compact ball mechanism

The torque limiter Securmax Economy was developed for applications that require a compact design of a torque limiter and a load-separating torque limiter. In this safety clutch, the torque is transmitted in a form-fitting manner via balls that are pressed into recesses by means of a set spring force.

If the torque is exceeded, these locking bodies move out of their recesses against the spring force and thus interrupt the torque. The Securmax Economy works on the basis of a particularly compact ball mechanism. The transmission element in the form of a chain wheel is also used as a functional part and is an integral part of the torque limiter.

Re-snapping occurs synchronously at 360° by default. The safety clutch can be combined with a proximity switch or microswitch to switch off the drive in the event of an overload. There are six designs with adjustable Overload torques from 7,5 to 1450 Nm. In addition to the version with an integrated sprocket, a version with a flange is also available.

Miniature slip clutch for overload protection up to voltage regulation

Orbit miniature slip clutchThe "Securmax Mini" is designed as a so-called permanent slip clutch and enables a service life of over 30 million cycles in continuous or intermittent operation. The way it works makes it suitable for web tension control, i.e. for maintaining constant tension when winding paper, wire or foil, for torque control, for example when machines are worn out, or for overload protection for people and equipment.

There are the drive elements as Friction for combination with a belt pulley or gear on the output side or as a slipping clutch for the shaft-shaft connection. Both variants are available with preset torque or adjustable. In order to do justice to the trend toward miniaturization, the range begins with slipping clutches with an outside diameter of 19,05 mm and a torque range of less than 1 Nm. The Mini range includes bore diameters from 5 to 32 mm for torques of up to 17 Nm. Additional versions of these miniature slipping clutches are available for applications with additional axial forces and for vertical applications.

Sliding hubs for torques up to 23.000 Nm

For higher performance ranges, the "Securmax panties"With adjustable slipping torques up to 23.000 Nm. Disc springs exert a preload force on the friction linings. The height of this spring force and thus the amount of torque can be infinitely adjusted by means of adjusting nut or larger models by means of adjusting screws within the respective adjustment range. The slip hubs can be combined with pulleys, gears or sprockets. In addition, a variant for extra-wide transmission elements in the range is available.

The compact slip clutches DF GEC from the Securmax Slip series transmit the torque by friction. If the set torque is exceeded, the clutches slip and thus limit the torque to this set value.

The multi-plate clutch and its industrial applications

The Securmax Slip series offers slip clutches combined with compensating clutches for applications with an additional shaft displacement compensation. With this combination, the user can choose between two variants – with Dog clutch or with a particularly compact one elastic coupling of type GEC. Here they also offer compensation for shaft misalignments depending on the size of up to 0,6 mm radially, up to 1° angularly and up to 0,8 mm axially. The series is available in nine sizes for an extended torque range from 1 Nm to 8000 Nm.

main areas of application Couplings and slip hubs are, among other things, transport and conveyor systems, woodworking machines, profiling and woodworking machines as well as the Automotive sector.

In addition, the program offers safety clutches, which, in combination with a backlash-free compensating coupling, enables a direct shaft-to-shaft connection. You can choose between versions with a vibration-damping elastomer coupling or optionally with a torsion-resistant one Disk clutch.

General technical knowledge

What is a slip clutch?

A slip clutch is safety clutch. It protects people from injury and machines from damage. The slipping clutch transmits this torque frictionally or by frictional connection, so it is also a friction clutch. When a set torque is reached, the slipping clutch automatically disconnects or connects the drive train. Slipping clutches are used more in small drives, pumps or generators or wherever a shaft or machine often starts and stops.
