OCP standards with two-phase direct chip cooling

09.11.2021 | When building and modernizing data centers, the focus is on cooling. Maximum performance is demanded of it so that hotspots are avoided and the high heat loads are dissipated in an energy-efficient manner. At the same time, the IT infrastructure should manage with minimal energy without compromising availability and performance. Rittal and Zutacore have combined standardized server racks according to OCP specifications with a two-phase direct chip cooling technology.

Standardization promotes cost-effective operation and improves infrastructure scalability. More and more CIOs are therefore relying on the OCP (Open Compute Project) Technology with its particularly energy-efficient, central DC distribution in the server or network rack. The "Rittal High Density Cooled-by-Zutacore" project shows how the advantages of the OCP standards for racks can be combined with high-performance cooling.

The new Open rack ORV3 supports 48 V DC power supply. It allows flexible configuration up to 44 OU / 48 RU. 100% preconfigured and assembled without tools, it ensures speed. The rack carries up to 1600 kg dynamic load. When it comes to cooling, there are many different variants, including the Rittal High Density Cooled-by-Zutacore system.

Against the lack of chips: the performance center will be continued

The Open Rack works according to the Principle of evaporative cooling and uses the latent energy of the refrigerant to cool the microchips. This eliminates local overheating in processors because the system precisely cools hotspots. The waterless, electrically non-conductive refrigerant reduces the risk of IT failure. The scalability of the system makes it future-proof.

Two variants for server rack cooling

Rittal and Zutacore offer two types on: the space-saving rear door cooling and the air- and water-cooled rack version.

Behind the Rear door cooling is based on the following principle: The liquid refrigerant flows into specially developed cold plates (Enhanced Nucleation Evaporator) heat sinks directly onto the microchip (CPU, GPU). By absorbing the processor heat, the refrigerant 3M Novec TM 7000 Engineered Fluid evaporates and becomes gaseous. The gaseous refrigerant is liquefied again in the heat exchanger. One or more pumps maintain the pressure to supply the heatsinks with refrigerant. The cooling technology components integrated in the rear door save significant space in the server rack.

Edge computing software efficiently increases productivity

The air-cooled In a rack solution was especially designed for fast growing processor and server performance. It supports up to 15 kW of heat dissipation per rack using the in-rack air-cooled condenser. It can be installed in any rack in almost any environment. In the water-cooled in-rack version, a water-cooled condenser ensures energy-efficient cooling of up to 70 kW of heat dissipation per rack.

Basics of the IT infrastructure

What is the difference between server rack and rack server?

A server rack and a rack server are two different IT terms that are often confused. Here is one clear distinction between the server rack versus the rack server:

  • A pair of Server rack is essentially a framework designed to hold various electronic devices in standardized bays called rack units (RU or U). It provides organization, cooling, power and cable management for servers and network hardware. Server racks can come in different sizes and designs depending on the needs of the data center or server room.
  • A pair of rack servers is a server with a slim design specially designed for installation in a server rack. The rack server is designed to be rack mountable horizontally and often features front connectors for easy accessibility.

In summary, a server rack is the physical rack or enclosure used to organize and hold various hardware devices, while a rack server is a type of server specifically designed to be mounted in such a rack.
