location technologyHannover Messe Hall 17, Stand D34

On the initiative of Trumpf put on the Hannover Messe 2020 around 60 industrial companies, including Pepperl + Fuchs, the new location technology Default "Omlox" in front. Using the new standard, various localization technologies can be linked together. examples are Ultrawideband (UWB), RFID, 5G or GPS Compass, The companies are responding to the increasing use of location solutions in industrial production.

"With this initiative, we want to make it easier for industrial customers to use hardware and software from different manufacturers," says Thomas Schneider, Managing Director Development, Trumpf. So far, the radio technologies for tracking and positioning have often only worked individually. Now all data for location should be displayed in a uniform coordinate system. This makes it much easier to integrate solutions from different providers.

Location technology for the factory of the future

Omlox places particular emphasis on the networked factory as the heart of the supply chain. In order to be able to determine distances exactly there, cm, the locating technology has to cope with metal, among other things, which deflects radio waves. Ultra broadband has established itself as a particularly robust radio technology here. With the help of these radio waves, applications such as the position of drones or the position of driverless transport systems in the room can be calculated more easily and navigated better.

So far, solutions from different providers in such applications could not be networked with each other. With the new standard for location technology Omlox, devices from different providers can be directly connected and combined. This is already possible in the consumer area with USB or Bluetooth technology via plug-and-play.

Industrial partners from Europe, Asia and the USA

The industrial partners of the new standard for location include companies of various technologies from all over Europe, the United States and Asia. These include the providers of sensor-based solutions Sick and Pepperl + Fuchs, software providers and IT service providers GFT and T-Systems, localization provider Bespoon, the research institute CEA Leti and the software provider Heidelberg Mobil.

Around 2020 companies are presenting the Omlox initiative to the public for the first time at the Hannover Messe 15. They will show how location technologies from different manufacturers could work together in the future. Incidentally, the standard for location technologies Omlox is open to other partners. An independent organization should push ahead with the development of the standard after the trade fair so as not to benefit any project partner in the future either.

  • Specialist articles Without communication via the 5G network, no factory of the future or is the 4G network still sufficient? After all, 5G allows peak data rates of up to 10 Gbit / s, latency times of less than 1 ms, availability of over 99,999% and is also extremely energy-saving. As a verified partner of Ericsson, HMS Industrial Networks offers the hardware required for factory automation. With the manufacturer's router, switch or gateway, the integration of 5G communication in systems and machines can be easily implemented and 4G replaced. The use cases also go far beyond factory automation and the number will increase in 2020.
