LmpvMovement creates vibration. Numerous constructions therefore require complex solutions for vibration and / or sound damping. These can be entirely or at least partially saved by the LMPV by using components made from rolled magnesium products. Because the lightest of all metallic materials inherently has a very high damping capacity. It is in the range of soft polymers.

Whether robots, grippers, positioning systems, assembly lines or high-speed components in packaging, machine tools, textile and printing machines - vibrations are generated by the movement. So that this does not affect precision, the speed of movement of robot, gripper and positioning arms, for example, is severely slowed down by the controller shortly before the end point. On the one hand, this reduces productivity. On the other hand, high forces acting on components such as bearings and joints cause increased wear on them.

A material that reduces the weight and at the same time has a high damping capacity against vibrations is ideal for such constructions. Magnesium offers both plus various other properties such as high strength and stiffness and low heat capacity. For applications that require a high level of vibration and/or soundproofing, LMPV Leichtmetall-Production & Processing GmbH, based in Oranienbaum, manufactures rolled magnesium semi-finished products using the cost-effective strip casting process.

Increase of productivity

The plates, sheets and blocks can be used to efficiently produce ultralight components in forming, cutting, forging and hydroforming processes. The weight savings compared to workpieces made of steel up to 60% and compared to aluminum components up to a third. In the case of robots, gripper systems and positioning structures, the reduction in mass while simultaneously optimizing the damping behavior enables a significant increase in performance. This is based on a faster and more precise movements and the associated increase in the clock speed. On the other hand, the reduced weight of the components reduces the stress on bearings, joints and components such as hydraulic lines and pumps, thus extending their service life. Ultimately, this results in a higher availability of the systems. Another advantage especially in mounting plates of the gripper systems of robots are higher loads. In classical mechanical engineering, the vibrations minimized by the excellent damping behavior and the weight-specific properties of magnesium also lead to advantages. Thus, with fast-moving machine parts such as carriages, spindles, shafts, flaps and swivel arms, their dynamics and productivity can be increased. Machine components made from the lightweight metal reduce the load on bearings and reduce thermally induced deformations due to their low heat capacity.

Simpler designs and resource savings

Magnesium components also offer optimization potential for transfer systems and assembly lines. To reduce vibration and noise, the sometimes very long units are equipped with special damping elements. These additional components, which are not required for the actual application, can be reduced to a minimum by constructive elements such as frame parts and magnesium feet. This not only allows for simpler and less expensive designs, but also reduces the consumption of resources. Another advantage is the very good recyclability of the material.

From component design to serial production

The magnesium semi-finished products are manufactured by LMPV mainly from the wrought alloy AZ 31 customer-specific in a width up to 450 mm - even in small quantities. In addition to the material for light and vibration and / or sound absorbing components, the company supports the design of the magnesium part to the finished product solution. In the case of magnesium forgings, Weisensee Warmpressteile GmbH in Eichenzell, which belongs to the group of companies, can also carry out series production from a single source.
