Lead-free bearings and a new concept for drive seals

Federal-Mogul will showcase a range of technologies that will reduce the need for maintenance on construction equipment. These include the particularly dirt-resistant Goetze drive seal concept from the HSL series and the lead-free "Glycodur" bearing technology for particularly difficult environmental conditions. The innovations aim to reduce environmental impact and extend maintenance intervals. They help to meet future legal environmental requirements today.
The HSL series of Goetze drive seals is an extension and special form of the trapezoidal ring seal, which is equipped with a protective lip, a special version of the elastomer part. It sets a new standard for the protection of dirt-sensitive transmission components when operating in damp and muddy surroundings. By compressing the sludge, high pressures are created, which in turn can force particles into the gap between the slip rings. There, they have an abrasive effect and can override the function of the seal. To prevent this, the HSL seals have been specially developed for such extreme requirements. The special form of the drive seal is available in all size ranges from 50 to 1500 mm diameter. In addition, they can be combined with various types of Federal-Mogul chilled cast iron.
Two variants of glycodur technology for lead-free bearings have been developed for various industrial applications. On the slide bearing on a steel backing, a porous, thin bronze material is sintered. The pores are filled with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other friction and wear reducing additives. This allows the bearing to be used in high life applications.
Glycodur A, a plain bearing with a steel backing and a polyoxymethylene (POM) topcoat firmly bonded to sintered bronze, has been developed for continuous operation in heavy duty construction machinery applications.
