Industrial absolute encoders

CANopen encoders for medical technology and mobile automation

16.04.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX | A rotary encoder is often difficult to integrate when used in moving parts or in tight installation spaces. In attachments from mobile work machines or in the Medical Technology the precise measurement of the position in the smallest possible construction is required. For these applications, Baumer has added the EAM300 to its product portfolio of encoders from the Magres EAM series. This is the smallest absolute multiturn encoder with CANopen interface.

The EAM300 magnetic sensor creates more space in the machine construction. The encoder can be light in existing structures retrofit. The compact diameter of the rotary encoder is only 30 mm with a length of only 59 mm (solid shaft, radial) or 53,3 mm (hollow shaft, radial). Numerous variants guarantee more design freedom. All encoder combinations are available as solid or hollow shaft encoders with cable connection or plug and radial or axial outlet.

Like its larger versions EAM360 and EAM580, the encoder has absolute accuracy of up to ±0,15° globally leading. This guarantees precise, absolute positioning. As early as 2019, the sensor specialist had advanced into a dimension that was previously only optical with the robust magnetic rotary encoders of the Magres series Sensors could afford.

All encoder series now with IO Link for the Internet of Things

The high precision and robustness of the shock and vibration-resistant Baumer encoders is based on the Double magnet arrangement. The magnetic scanning reliably delivers signals even in harsh environments such as dirt and dust. Solid Bearing stabilize additionally. The EAM300 is suitable for applications in mammography, radiology or X-ray machines for the Medical Technology, for attachments in Construction and agricultural technology as well as limited installation spaces for factory automation.

Robust magnetic encoders with unrivaled angular accuracy

13.11.2019 | Baumer series magnetic rotary encoders EAM580 and EAM360 work particularly reliably and with high precision. The magnetic absolute rotary encoders work with an angular accuracy of ±0,15 degrees and thus enable exact positioning in the application.

"No competitor product with comparable robustness and durability can hold a candle to the EAM580, EAM360 in terms of absolute angle accuracy," emphasizes  Daniel Kleiner, Head of the Industrial Encoder Business Unit. With this generation of robust magnetic rotary encoders, according to Kleiner, Baumer has advanced into a dimension in terms of precision that was previously reserved for optical rotary encoders. "In addition, the series offers the integration of efficiency-increasing interfaces.

"Users report again and again that they achieve visibly better results in their measurements with EAM encoders than with any other magnetic encoder on the market," emphasizes Catherine Blum, Product Manager at Baumer in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. "Measurements in the Baumer laboratory show why: rotary encoders from competitors only meet the values promised in the data sheet under ideal conditions, if at all, but not under demanding environmental conditions. The angular precision of ±0,15° is guaranteed under the wide range of operating conditions specified ".

Patent pending double magnet arrangement

The high precision and robustness of the encoder is ensured by the double magnet arrangement (for which a patent has been applied for), the interaction with a powerful, energy-efficient microprocessor and sophisticated algorithms for signal processing for the conversion, filtering and interpolation of the measured values. Magres encoder work with magnetoresistive (MR) technology. With two signal periods per revolution, it delivers twice as many as the Hall sensors that are often used in rotary encoders from other manufacturers.

That is all shockproof up to 500 g and vibration proof packed up to 30 g. The extra robust EAM R series is also designed for maximum corrosion resistance (CX), use in vehicles (E1-compliant) and functionally safe applications (up to PLd).

Encoder with IO-Link without bearings and explosion-proof

When developing the EAM series, Baumer benefited from the fact that the sensor specialist provided the Basic principles of magnetic rotary encoders co-invented and has built up the know-how very successfully for two decades. The Magres encoder is now in its 4th generation.

Due to their high accuracy, the encoders are even suitable for use in Medical devices: In patient beds for X-ray machines and computer tomographs, for example, they ensure that patients are positioned precisely during treatment. Because here the fraction of an angular degree can be decisive for the success of the treatment. But even with countless industrial applications, the precision of the EAM580, EAM360 encoders also determines how efficiently and effectively the entire application works.

In addition to numerous fieldbus interfaces, Baumer also offers the greatest variety Real-time ethernet-Interfaces such as Profinet, Ethercat and Ethernet / IP. This simplifies device integration enormously for the user. Above all, however, it increases via Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) for neighborhood detection as well as Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) or Device Level Ring (DLR), which secure the transmission of data to the controller even in the event of an interruption in a branch of the network, the availability of the system.

OPC UA standard for the Internet of Things

Also supported is the OPC UA communication standard. This ensures a reaction-free and secure data exchange between different systems. The open and platform-independent standard can also be easily adapted to future requirements. This means that the EAM580, EAM360 encoders are ready for the requirements of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). If required, they provide an evaluation of the data for positioning, speed, temperature and operating hours. In this way, users can optimize their processes and improve the design of machines and systems.

A preset / reset button can be used to set specific position values such as for reference. A plausibility check when setting the device parameters as well as detailed status reports provide the necessary information on site.

The device status is also displayed via multicolored LEDs visualized. The EAL580 supports maximum availability of machines and systems through Device Level Ring (DLR). If there is an interruption in a branch of a network in a ring topology, all rotary encoder data will still be sent to the controller.

The EAL580 is currently the most compact 58 mm Ethernet encoder with a continuous Hollow shaft. This means that it can be optimally integrated into a machine or drive train and enables redundant systems to be set up easily. Thanks to the radial cable outlet, expensive angled plugs and tight, fault-prone bending radii of the connection cables are avoided.

The purely optical one that has proven itself many times in the field Optoturn technology for single and multiturn position detection ensures the highest accuracy and maximum magnetic field resistance. Thanks to a web server integrated in the rotary encoder, the device is ready for the requirements of the industrial Internet of Things. By diagnosing and evaluating data such as position, speed, temperature or operating hours, processes can be optimized and the design of machines and systems improved as required.
