Safe plastic connection for fast wound healing

The novel Micro water jet device "Debritom +" (image) from Carag was developed for medical wound cleaning. It is produced with the most modern processes and promises a particularly gentle and faster wound cleaning and faster healing. The fact that the device can work this way is also thanks to laser technology from LaserMicronics.
In particular, chronic wounds can be treated with very little pain using a micro-water jet. A highly concentrated jet of water removes the viscous wound coverings, removes foreign bodies from acute wounds or flushes contaminated wounds efficiently. A desired micro-haemorrhage is generated, thereby stimulating wound healing again. The treatment significantly reduces wound healing time and protects healthy tissue. In addition, the treatment goes fast - a relief for both patients and doctors and nurses.
Produced in the clean room
In order to meet the high demands of doctors and patients, the manufacture of the Debritom + device is also very demanding. The materials and workmanship must be exceptionally high quality. For hygienic cleanliness is therefore produced in the clean room, and the components were made of high-quality plastics, which have a high resistance to cleaning agents.
The most important functionality of the Debritom + itself, which is distributed by the company Medaxis from Switzerland, is the pressure generation. The liquid is pressurized in the device with up to 200 bar pressure, the test pressure is even up to 400 bar. A key component is therefore the valve block in which the pressure is generated. To ensure the strength of the connection of the two components made of POM-H, the manufacturer relies on laser plastic welding by the company Lasermicronics GmbH. It uses the process to produce safe, hygienic and hermetically sealed connections between plastic components.
The valve block for the wound cleaning device is a microfluidic component whose contour is traversed in the welding process. The LPKF laser system uses the data to determine the exact welding parameters and ensures precise welds. The resulting compounds have almost the strength of the base material. The machine also enables complete process control and traceability of results. This way, the welds are precisely positioned and the results checked.
LaserMicronics also joins the components already produced in the clean room in a class 5 cleanroom. Welding times of only a few seconds allow high clock rates. The fact that the machine combines a short cycle time with high weld quality ensures high throughput and prompt availability of the welded components. This contributes to short delivery times for the Debritom +.
Further applications
The laser-plastic welding process is also suitable for the manufacture of housings with electronics and sensors, for cartridges or for other microfluidic plastic components. Particle formation, such as those resulting from the effects of minimal friction in ultrasonic welding, are avoided in laser plastic welding. In addition, the process does not require any chemical additives for the joining of the material. This is a particularly important issue for both medical and food applications, as it is essential to avoid even the slightest contamination in both industries.
