Technical glass such as glass ceramics, acrylic glass and Plexiglas play a crucial role in industrial applications. Glass ceramics impress with their temperature resistance and low expansion, while acrylic glass and Plexiglas are known for their high transparency and fracture resistance. This article highlights innovations and interesting applications of these materials in Manufacturing.

Impact-resistant special molding compound for high-gloss body components

16.10.2019 | Electric drives open up new design possibilities for vehicle bodies. Röhm Molding Compounds presents “Plexiglas Hi-Gloss NTA-5”, an impact-resistant special molding compound for black, high-gloss applications and at the same time robust components such as radiator grilles, ventilation grilles, decorative panels, mirror housings and pillar panels.

The Electric drive will significantly change the appearance of vehicles. Among other things, the radiator grille could be eliminated entirely, as electric drives do not need as much ventilation as combustion engines. This gives designers scope to design the front of the vehicle with decorative elements: high-gloss components ensure a particularly elegant, high-quality look. However, materials used in the lower part of the vehicle must be particularly robust.

Molded release film prevents galvanic corrosion in the car

Plexiglass Hi-Gloss NTA-5 is the molding compound within the Plexiglas Hi-Gloss product range with the highest impact resistance. The heat resistance is at a high level for impact-resistant PMMA molding compounds. In addition, the material is weather-resistant, scratch-resistant and has a high color depth. Small scratches can be polished out on the high-gloss Class A surfaces.

Fatigue-free foldable glass displays

06.05.2019/XNUMX/XNUMX | Current foldable displays are made of plastic and are therefore prone to scratches, creases and premature total failure. Conventional smartphone displays do not have these problems because they are made of at least two layers of partially tempered glass. However, due to the glass, these displays cannot be easily folded. LPKF presents a solution for this task with the "Lide" technology.

The Glass displays The glass facing the viewer can be made as thin as desired and thus foldable. However, this is not so easy with the thicker back of the display, the so-called backplane. LPKF has developed a concept for foldable displays made of glass based on its Lide technology.

Lide enables the economical production of microstructures in glass without creating microcracks or stresses in the material. With appropriately designed microstructures, glass can be produced without surface defects bend without fatigue and fold.

Light-adaptable acrylic glass and mineral high-performance fillers

hpminerals091811.09.2018 | HPF The Mineral Engineers presents the masterbatch “Acrysmart” for acrylic glass, which changes its permeability to light and solar radiation depending on the ambient temperature. In addition, new developments in the field of high-performance mineral fillers are shown.

Acrysmart Acrylic glass panels enable automatic shading at higher temperatures and optimal use of daylight at lower temperatures. Solar energy can be used in a controlled manner, thus saving heating and cooling energy. Whether it's color play, shading or patterns and lettering created by heat: there are hardly any limits to the creative freedom.

With the “Silatherm” product family, we have succeeded in developing new fillers that significantly increase the thermal conductivity in plastics. At the same time, these fillers give Thermoplastics and thermosets have better mechanical strengths. There are now five main product ranges: Silatherm 1360, 1466, Plus, Lite and Advance. Thanks to constant development and testing in our in-house plastics technology center, optimized grain size mixtures for higher fill levels are now available. For all products, significantly better homogenization can be achieved through the surface coating tailored to the polymer system.

This leads to even better mechanics and higher thermal conductivities.aoline are Phyllosilicates, which are more or less platelet-shaped depending on the deposit. Kaolin TEC 110 is an extremely hexagonal quality with excellent reinforcing properties. The use of the silanized types further improves the good mechanical properties and the ease of incorporation. In addition, tests in the HPF plastics technology center have shown that the use of expensive flame retardants can be significantly reduced by using Kaolin TEC 110 AST. When heated to high temperatures, kaolin releases water of crystallization and thus effectively supports the effectiveness of the flame retardants in Synergy. Since kaolin is a natural product, there is no additional environmental impact in the event of a fire.
