In the automotive industry, for example, protection class IP67 plays a decisive role in the production of housings for modern drive batteries: The ingress of water and the associated short circuits and fires must be avoided at all costs.
A specially designed IP67 demonstrator reveals drop rates and leak rates. Using various capillaries, the demonstrator simulates how many drops of water penetrate at a certain pressure through leakage channels of different diameters. In addition to the diameter and length of a leak channel, the housing material is also a decisive factor, because water drops dissolve much more easily, for example, from aluminum than from steel or ABS.
