Miniaturized laser distance sensor for precise object measurement
02.02.2021 | Baumer presents a new family of laser distance sensors. The laser distance sensors OM20 and OM30 IO-Link meets the trend towards more efficient and compact machines and systems without compromising the performance of the Sensors to have to accept.
An OM20 or OM30 laser distance sensor with IO-Link can be used flexibly in many applications due to its high measurement performance and compact design. In particular, these sensors offer a reliable, surface-independent optical distance measurement with a Repeatability of up to 1 µm and an extremely high measuring speed of up to 5 kHz. With the OM20 laser distance sensor, all of this is integrated in the small 37 x 35 x 13 mm housing. For measurements on structured surfaces such as machined metals or wood, the OM30 sensors function reliably thanks to the line beam shape with a range of up to 550 mm.

Thanks to the standardized IO-Link interface the sensors can be easily inserted into the steering integrate and offer easy parameterization. In addition to standard process data such as distance value or signal quality, additional data such as the measuring rate and exposure reserve of the sensor are available. The latter can be used as an indicator for the contamination of the sensor and thus supports predictive maintenance.

Thanks to the factory calibration, the sensor is immediately ready for use and delivers exact and repeatable measurement results, without any complex conversion or external software.
The new multi-spot measuring principle is based on the Light section process. In the distance sensor, up to 600 measured values per measurement are determined from an object and, thanks to the intelligent evaluation, the distance is calculated.
Thanks to a resolution of up to 2 µm or 0,008% of the measuring range at a measuring frequency of up to 500 Hz, the sensor offers exceptional quality stable measurement resultsthat are still extremely precise even with significant external light influences.
This makes the Mesax Multi-Spot distance sensor suitable for optical laser distance measurement and the ideal tool for a variety of applications in the Measuring and testing technology. Areas of application are, for example, the precise measurement of shiny molded parts in quality inspection or the optimal positioning of grinding wheels with rough surfaces on a workpiece.
Accurate and non-contact inline measurements without interrupting the production process using optical sensors are now an important part of the production of high quality products. For demanding surfaces such as brushed or galvanized metal, the OM70 laser distance sensors with linear beams from Baumer ensure the necessary reliability.
Measurements with a point laser beam deliver very unstable and therefore unreliable measurement results due to the structural differences on the surface, color edges or interference. The OM70 sensors have a very narrow line, especially in the focus of the measuring range. This allows the full information content of the sensor's receiving line to be used. This minimizes the effects of small unevenness such as machining marks, small scratches or depressions.
Applications are z. B. the height measurement on brushed metal plates (double sheet control) or the measurement on wooden surfaces. Inductive distance sensors for measuring the smallest deflections

The position is then taught by the sensor using a teach command and the sensor displays a defined initial value at this position (offset correction).

No matter whether via cable, teach adapter or via the control: after installation, the sensors are adjusted at the push of a button and are ready for use immediately. In combination with its robust housing and minimal temperature drift, the linearized sensor is very suitable for distance measurements in handling, mechanical or lightweight construction.
