mapal0117Mapal has developed a new cutting material series especially for milling cast iron materials, which covers the entire range of cast iron materials GJL, GJV and GJS. First results show that with the new cutting materials, in addition to a significant increase in tool life, higher cutting speeds are also possible.

The cutting material series is based on newly developed carbide substrates. The microstructures of the hard metals were modeled in such a way that they each provide an optimum relationship between toughness and wear resistance.

The cutting material series includes three PVD coated carbides and two CVD coated grades. The PVD coating consists of an optimized TiAlCrN with the finest structuring of the layer structure, resulting in an optimal ratio between toughness and hardness / wear resistance. The CVD coating is based on an MT-TiCN with Alpha-Al2O3 liner. This layer combination brings along high resistance to wear and good temperature resistance.

For the PVD coating as well as for the CVD coating, a special after-treatment has been developed, which ensures an extremely smooth surface and thus ensures optimum chip removal. This reduces tribochemical wear to a minimum. In the case of CVD coating, the residual stress state of the layer is additionally adjusted in a targeted manner by the after-treatment and thus the cutting edge is stabilized or the toughness of the cutting material is increased.
