FDIFoundation Fieldbus, Hart and Profibus Field devices from various manufacturers are being integrated into an ABB process control system for the first time using Field Device Integration (FDI) Device Packages and typical applications such as parameterization, configuration, diagnostics and maintenance are demonstrated. The system already uses prototypes of the standard FDI host components developed by the FDI Cooperation.

The prototype is used to verify the FDI concepts, test the standard host components and demonstrate FDI functionality. It makes a significant contribution to the quality assurance of the FDI specifications and tools.

Next Steps:

* Publication of the first draft of the FDI specifications, end 2011
* Completion of the FDI conformity test concepts, center 2012
* Completion of validation and approval of the FDI member review specifications in the Foundations, mid-2012
* Completion of the FDI standard host components such as EDD Engine and User Interface (UI) Engine by the FDI Cooperation, end 2012.

FDI provides users and manufacturers of field devices with consistent and manageable device integration in systems, asset management and device configuration solutions. The benefits for end users and manufacturers: Life cycle costs can be lowered sustainably, handling is simplified and technical risks are minimized.

The five major interest groups - FDT Group, Fieldbus Foundation, HART Communication Foundation, PROFIBUS & PROFINET International and OPC Foundation - will continue their efforts in integrating equipment as part of a joint venture. For example, in September 2011 was founded FDI Coooperation, LLC (US Limited Liability Company) to establish an organization for the management of a common and unified field device integration (FDI) solution.
