Modern, complex machining and inspection systems work on the basis of ultrasound, X-ray sources or image recognition systems. They allow highest precision, which in practice, however, can only be used in combination with high-performance motion control systems. With the Motion Controller MC2 and the associated drive amplifier series SD2S Sieb + Meyer offers a solution for these applications.

The MC2 motion controller acts as a link between the higher-level PC-based control level and one or more SD2 / SD2S drive amplifiers. It receives and processes the data and commands of the controller and forwards them to the drive. The result is an intelligent drive system that can precisely and synchronously control up to 8 positioning axes from a PC-based analysis software. Communication takes place via UDP (User Datagram Protocol) to IEC 61800 via Ethernet. An optional fieldbus module provides interfaces to Profinet, Ethercat, Profibus and other bus systems. The communication with the drives takes place via Servolink 4 via fiber-optic cable.

In machining and inspection systems, the software-based analysis process must be synchronized as optimally as possible with the real web movement in the machine. The problem usually arises that the signals provided by motion controllers or drive amplifiers do not match those of the analysis system in terms of resolution and scaling and are also not time-synchronized. The data of the positioning measuring systems must be prepared accordingly with cost-intensive evaluation units. The drive system MC2 / SD2S makes it possible to provide this information with a resolution of 0,1 μm directly from the drive amplifier. The evaluation of the data can be parameterized flexibly from the user software via the MC2.

The motion controller MC2 itself operates a real-time operating system, with which data can be transmitted synchronously with the drive amplifiers. As a result, a controlled spatial movement of the axes is possible. Optionally, the MC2 can be equipped with a soft PLC according to IEC 61131, with which the processes for the connected axes can be programmed.
