Emerson shows how the integration of innovative controllers and servo motors in packaging machines the direct adaptation of the packaging to the goods to be shipped is realized. An example of this is the Cartonwrap machines, which manufacture inexpensive boxes of corrugated cardboard for all types of products. You adapt the boxes in size to the object to be packaged. The feeding takes place via a conveyor belt and the cardboard is formed around the product.
The "Digitax ST" servocontrollers used in conjunction with a cross-network management system coordinate all menus and motion profiles for the individual processes. They are connected to a central PC via an Ethernet network. The servo drives also take on decentralized control tasks. Each controller is equipped with an SM Applications Plus module. These are pluggable automation modules with integrated fieldbus communication and additional inputs and outputs.
By using these flexible and expandable servo drives, the manufacturer of packaging machines, CMC Machinery, can do without an external PLC; Cable connections are reduced and the communication speed is increased.
The application modules are equipped with tailor-made software. Each machine is equipped with 22 Digitax ST servodrives and 22 "Unimotor fm" servomotors. There are also six frequency inverters of the Unidrive SP and Commander type.
