It does not always have to be a combination of linear axes with which two-dimensional positioning is carried out. The use of planar drives is sufficient for elegant and highest demands. They are fast, they position exactly at freely selectable points and have a long service life. Planar drives consist of a stator plate and one or more rotor modules. The planar drive offers free movement in the plane and the approach of any points with high repeatability. By using multiple rotor modules, even complex systems with multiple axes can be easily constructed. It is possible to combine coordinate systems with overlapping trajectories of the runners.
The repeat accuracy and wear-free operation are mainly due to the air-magnetic bearing of the PRM-P. Built-in compressed air nozzles in the rotors create a stable air cushion, while the magnetic field of the stator holds the rotor. This design also allows installation in an inclined position or overhead. The application areas of the planar drive include sophisticated assembly processes in microelectronics, assembly and testing tasks as well as probe monitoring. Similarly, the flat design and the low moving mass in the laser and measuring technology are in demand.
