Steinmeyer presents the "Guard Plus "concept for permanent monitoring of the condition of precision ball screws. The sensor technology was developed together with IFM Electronic and focuses on the realization of the Smart Factory in the sense of Industry 4.0.
One of the most common failure criteria of ball screw drives is the loss of preload between spindle and nut due to adhesive or abrasive wear on raceways and balls. This wear can now be measured using Guard Plus. Sensors detect the preload on the rolling contact zone between ball and nut. An electronic evaluation unit forwards the analyzed measurement signal to the machine control. This informs the machine operator about the status via a traffic light indicator and recommends a pending replacement of the ball screw drive. The repair can thus be planned.
In addition, the Guard Plus system allows the capture of machining forces and superimposed or exceptional operating forces, such as those encountered during an overload or crash. The recording of this data over the life of the ball screw allows conclusions about an overload and thus on the time of its replacement. In addition, permanent condition monitoring helps to tailor the ball screw lubrication to the specific requirements of application-specific load collectives.
