Harmonic Drive AG presents the European robot shoot "iCub", which the IIT (Italian Institute of Technology, developed together with many other European research institutes in the five-year Robotcub project. Visual appearance is a roughly modeled after three or four year old child. Robot is available in its final version on 53 degrees of freedom. As basic skills has the iCub crawling, general image processing, object recognition and manipulation.
The infantile form of the iCub is no accident and is proving a great advantage for the robot when it comes to skills to learn from people. Unconsciously, people change their language, gestures and facial expressions compared with infants. We speak with children, we speak very clearly and very stressed. We pay attention to movements slowly and clearly and execute synchronously with the voice that describes precisely the movement or its purpose. In addition we show our view, where the child should look just to understand the task. This effect, which usually help parents and adults young children in learning and understanding the world, the developers took advantage.
An important criterion in service robotics is the compact and lightweight construction of all components. Therefore, when constructing 29 Harmonic Drive gear drives and were of different size for use.
