Colour-stable, tailor-made polyamide for electric cars

BASF Polyamides11.05.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX | With the Ultramid A3U44G6 DC OR (PA66 - GF30 FR) BASF expands the portfolio of flame-retardant technical Plastics in the manufacture of electric vehicles. The high technical requirements in electromobility require innovative solutions based on PA66. With the tried and tested Ultradur (PBT), the color stability can be largely guaranteed, especially in orange (RAL 2003), which is in high demand throughout the industry. Conventional polyamides, on the other hand, tend to have strong color variations. These polyamides also show yellowing on heat aging.

“High-voltage components are usually exposed to significant temperature fluctuations. With conventional polyamide, this leads to severe discoloration. Our newly developed Ultramid A3U44G6 DC OR polyamide closes the gap in terms of color stability and mechanical strength," explains Tina Weller, Product Development BASF. For the first time, the new polyamide meets all the criteria of the color stability and resistance to heat aging. It allows long-lasting color coding, which is safety-relevant in the sensitive area of high voltages. The color stability was confirmed in tests after 1000 hours at temperatures of up to 130 °C.

In addition to color consistency, the Ultramid A3U44G6 DC OR with a CTI 600 offers a high electrical insulation. The use of tailor-made pigments while at the same time avoiding flame retardants containing halides counteracts electrocorrosion. Until now, it was difficult to contain it, especially when it was damp. "During development, we attached particular importance to avoiding halides such as iodide and bromide, thus paving the way for a long-lasting product without contact corrosion," explains Michael Roth, Product Development BASF.

At a very low level total halide content of less than 50 ppm, the PA66 achieves fire protection class UL94 V0 at 0,4 mm. In addition, the polyamide is equipped with a special organic heat stabilization package.

Low-corrosion polyamides with very long tool life

Ultrapolymers polyamides

Cast nylon Lauramid receives new DIN designation

Handtmann polyamide

24.05.2012/XNUMX/XNUMX | The high-tech art stuff Lauramide from Handtmann Elteka receives a new material abbreviation. The cast polyamide previously designated “PA 12 G” according to DIN is now called “PA 15860 C” according to the current EU DIN EN 12. “C” stands for the English term for Icing, namely “cast”.

The high-performance plastic polyamide Lauramid shows its advantages over simpler ones, such as those of injection-moulded plastics, among other things through its special manufacturing method out of. Lauramid is poured into molds without pressure and polymerizes there. This results in low-stress and therefore extremely dimensionally stable semi-finished and finished parts. Other advantages of casting: Metal parts such as hubs can be permanently cast into Lauramid components during manufacture and components can be manufactured with near-net shapes. Both save further processing costs.
