There are different chuck for processing workpieces on a machine, including power chucks, jaw chucks or eccentric chucks. They all have in common that they either die Tools such as drills or milling cutters. Or they clamp the ones to be machined as a so-called lathe chuck workpieces on the machine. We present new developments like that here lathe chuck with optimized power transmission, which Röhm will present at the AMB 2022.

Lathe chuck with optimized power transmission

07.07.2022 | The new lathe chuck Duro-M from Rohm makes variable machining of turned parts as easy as possible with a spiral ring, innovative lens geometry and optimized power transmission. The chuck is available as standard in all diameters from ø 74 to ø 1250 mm, other sizes are also possible on request. There is no limit to the number of clamping jaws. The entire range with two, three, four or six clamping jaws is available. This means that even particularly thin-walled workpieces can be perfectly clamped and machined on the machine.

"The Duro-M is our new series of lathe chucks for clamping turned parts on conventionally clamping lathes and milling machines, rotary tables and dividing heads. We have the right Duro-M solution ready for every application, so that really all metalworkers can benefit from the many advantages of our new geometry," says Joerg Bauriedl, product manager for manual chucks at Röhm.

Workholdingclamping technology | Intelligent, safe, efficient!

The special lens recess makes the lathe chuck lighter. This protects the bearings of the lathe spindle better than with other lathe chucks. In addition, it can be accelerated with a lower energy requirement. The machining tools are more accessible, so that, for example, drilling or milling work on the turned parts can be carried out much more flexibly than before near the clamping point.

“Because the cutters don't have to be stretched out that far, the risk of vibrations is reduced. Machining is safer and more precise, and that enables higher cutting speeds," says Mr. Bauriedl. The new chucks offer a very good power transmission. The maximum clamping force can be achieved with little effort. So that the lathe chucks of the Duro-M series can be aligned particularly quickly and precisely on the machine spindle, they have been provided with a control edge. The concentricity can already be optimized with the help of the dial gauge during assembly, which saves time when commissioning the machines.

The proven spiral ring of the manufacturer is drop-forged and highly tempered. On the outside of the chuck body, the Duro-M lathe chucks have a drip edge where the cooling water can run off in a defined manner. The basic steel body of the Duro-M is one-piece and therefore very rigid. Chip nests are prevented. The lathe chucks have minimal disruptive contours and offer high concentricity in the standard version. "If necessary, we can respond to special customer requests here and individually match the exciting assemblies such as the chuck body, spiral ring and jaws," explains Jörg Bauriedl.

Compact chucks for robust continuous use

HKpraezision021728.06.2017 | HK precision engineering expands the range of small, powerful workpiece clamping devices with a three-jaw chuck and two two-jaw chucks for machine tools and machining centers. Workpieces can be clamped centrically and precisely in position with the stationary clamping devices. The small dimensions benefit the traversing paths of the machine, especially when space is tight. The patented technology enables clamping forces of up to 11 kN.

A centering chuck and two two-jaw chucks for use on Machining centers the company developed. That Centering clamping element DBF-RD is available in the versions 080, 110 and 160. They are intended for use as stationary chucks on machine tools to clamp workpieces in hydraulic clamping devices centrically and precisely.

The two-jaw chuck in the versions GR100, GR125 and GR160 grip parallel and clamp centrically. The hydraulic actuation can be switched for inside and outside gripping. They are available in round and square versions. With an overall height of just 68 mm, the ZBF-QD-GR100 two-jaw chuck is one of the lowest of its kind in the world. In the round version, the overall height is just 78 mm, which in connection with the possible clamping forces is unique in the world to date.

The hydraulically operated two-jaw chuck with centric clamping function consist of a very compact and very flat body. This allows the chucks to be positioned directly next to each other in grid dimensions of 100 mm, 125 mm and 160 mm. All threads and connections are on the underside. In this way, chips can flow off unhindered. Optional adapter plates and jaw blanks that can be adapted to workpieces expand the possibilities. The clamping repetition accuracies are 0,02 mm, a sealing air connection is integrated and operation is maintenance-free.

Intelligent chuck with integrated metrology

Hainbuch chuck24.08.2016 | hornbeam takes off digitally - from automated loading, unmanned processing of different parts ranges to process control. Digital data from a workflow are now able to monitor processes and, if evaluated and processed, increase productivity. The clamping technology also generates data that contribute to the optimization of process flows.

The intelligent chuck will be presented Top plus IQ with integrated Measurement Technology, which can constantly measure the electronic clamping force and changes under rotation. This is real-time determination of the actual clamping force. With the optimal clamping force, workpiece deformation and uncontrolled workpiece losses are avoided. It is also possible to measure the clamping path with a comparison of the workpiece tolerance range. The workpiece diameter is measured and only good parts are processed.

In addition, the measurement results can Traceability for DIN EN 1550 are documented. The feed force tester for RS feed tongs electronically measures the feed force and determines the ideal values. The identical settings are possible for several feed grippers when used in multi-spindle machines and can be documented without any problems.

Lightweight mini chucks with a small clamping device interference contour

Hainbuch chuck without interference contour

28.07.2015/XNUMX/XNUMX | The small mini-feed from hornbeam - the round "Spanntop" and the hexagonal "Toplus" are now also modular compatible. The spanning top has an adaptation ring in order to maintain its small interfering contour and to be able to use the modular system flexibly. The existing "Mando Adapt" mandrels and jaw modules harmonize very well with the new Spanntop mini. The Toplus version does not need an adapter ring, but has already integrated a corresponding mounting hole circle for cheek modules.

Next year it will have its own Mando Adapt series give. Both mini chucks have a full passage to increase the depth of the chuck and are available in three standard lengths. This means that they do justice to the different draw tube positions.

Clamping device interference contour and mass play an increasingly important role in finishing. Accessibility of the tools and lower energy consumption characterize a modern and future-oriented clamping device. Workpiece blanks now have smaller oversizes than ever before. That is why it is not the chip volume that is in the foreground there, but ultimately the finish machining. Due to better workpiece accessibility, shorter and therefore more stable tools can be used on the main and counter spindles with the chucks of the Mini series. This in turn has a direct influence on the surface quality.

And it's not just the crowd shrunk by a good 38%, the chuck diameter and the overall length have also changed reduced by a third or a quarter. The reduced interference contour makes it easier to choose the right one tools and accommodates the limited installation space available, especially with counter-spindle machines. The lower mass is reflected in a lower energy requirement, especially in series operation. The cycle time is reduced due to the more dynamic spindle acceleration. And all in all, the costs per workpiece are reduced.

Hexagonal chucks for main and counter spindle

Hainbuch Reuter Decker

13.06.2014/XNUMX/XNUMX | As the tool specialist MAS decided to produce prototypes in the field of special tools for customers in-house, only Hainbuch came into question as a clamping device manufacturer for the Mori Seiki NTX2000 machine. The focus here is on rigidity, stability, repeat accuracy and holding forces. Sparks have been flying in the new testing department at MAS since autumn 2013: With the hexagonal “Toplus mini” chucks on the main and counter spindles – one as a pull-back and one as a fixed-axle variant.

Hainbuch chuck Toplus miniMAS has been a successful partner for Sumitomo in Baden-Württemberg for 30 years, especially with cutting materials made of CBN and carbide. Marc Decker, responsible for process development at MAS, reports: "Requests for special tools, in-house developments and tool and customer tests were piling up, so a solution had to be found and that was the production of prototypes for semi-standard tools, which go into production immediately after approval. For example, boring bars with a diameter of 0,65 to 3 mm and grooving holders with internal cooling could no longer be covered with standard tools.

Then in a milling turning center from mori seiki invested to remedy the situation. "But one thing was clear to us: If you buy a machine that only runs trials and tool tests, then you want to rule out all other sources of error," says Decker.

“The answer to the question about the right clamping device was easy, only one is suitable for such a machine High-end product from Hainbuch.” Hainbuch was known through Decker's earlier work for a large machine manufacturer and the experience with the clamping devices was very good. Decker and his colleagues are completely convinced of the longevity and ease of set-up.

Hainbuch special tools MasThus, no thought at all was wasted on another clamping device manufacturer. "We got Achim Platzer, sales manager at Hainbuch, to discuss all the details. Mr. Platzer then recommended the Toplus mini chuck to us because of the small interfering contour and better workpiece accessibility. As it turned out later, that was absolutely the right decision,” reports Decker.

“Because we now have a small and handy system. And even because of the thin wall, we don't have a single disadvantage compared to a normal chuck. Our experiences with the minis are consistently positive, roughing up to 6 mm works without any problems, we have few centrifugal losses and stability deficits don't come up either."

Waiting times reduced to a minimum

"Time is money" is the motto and MAS has recognized this. In addition to the new milling-turning center from Mori Seiki, another high precision lathe bought from the company Kummer. In addition, investments were made in a new CAD/CAM system NX from Siemens, a designer was hired and a measuring workstation was created. Decker explains: “This newly established test department has drastically reduced the throughput time for the development of new tools, by a whopping 75%. It's just that if something is outsourced or manufactured externally, the production of the prototype, the possible reworking and the subsequent approval process takes a correspondingly long time.

Hainbuch Toplus mini insertBut the times are over when we can use the Mori Seiki machine and the Hainbuch chucks to do a wide variety of machining processes, such as Turning, milling, drilling or polygon turning, represent. We manufacture the tool, test it immediately, make adjustments if necessary and then deliver it to the customer. If customers have problem components for which they cannot cope with the service life and the requirements, we are also there to help. We replicate the customer process on the machine and check where things are not running smoothly and where improvements can be made."

MAS invests in a new company building including a test and demonstration center that will open its doors in summer 2015. Then the Mori Seiki machine will be moved from its current location in DMG's showroom to its own. In this way, when new products come onto the market, the sales force and employees can be better trained.

Workshops for the most diverse machining tasks, there will also be for customers. Customers not only benefit from faster prototypes for special tools, but also from highly trained employees and special training courses. And who knows, maybe there will be more machine investments in the future. Then, of course, MAS can again count on the advice, service and suitable products from Hainbuch.
