Emission-free, economical and as powerful as a conventional drive - the Sightseeing trains With its newly developed electric locomotive for railways, Rügen offers a product for the transport of tourists that is in tune with the times. To connect the drive train with the electric motor, the company relies on the robust and powerful “Roba-DS”Disc pack clutch from Mayr Drive technology. This can withstand the high loads over the long term.

Powerful, emission-free electric locomotive

Oslo, Madrid, Copenhagen, London or Paris – in an effort to improve urban quality of life and environmental protection, more and more European cities are banning cars from their inner city areas. The various concepts range from the exclusion of conventional diesel vehicles to a complete ban on cars and the creation of one Infrastructure, which is intended to make motorized private transport superfluous. Like Deutsche Post, which is converting its vehicle fleet to environmentally friendly electric cars in the medium term, more and more companies are currently looking for alternative solutions.

And so Sightseeing Trains Rügen GmbH offers a powerful electric locomotive for railways emission-freeit product for transporting tourists. “Our electric locomotive is not only used when inner cities need to be emission-free, for example, but also in nature parks that are otherwise closed to traffic,” explains Stefan Kruger, Head of Production and Development at Sightseeing Trains Rügen in Binz.

For example, the electric locomotive opens up new possibilities where driving bans would otherwise exclude people - for example families with small children or people who have problems walking. “With our electric locomotive, a larger group of people can take part in offers from nature parks in mountainous regions, for example,” adds Stefan Krüger. Because she is extraordinary high torque: Performance and range correspond to a conventional drive. “It can easily handle even difficult routes with gradients of up to 24 percent.”

Compensating couplings for high temperatures

In order to connect the drive train with the electric motor in the locomotive, the Binz railway manufacturer relies on the robust and powerful Roba-DS disk pack clutch from Chr. Mayr GmbH + Co. KG from Mauerstetten. The Clutch compensates for shaft misalignment and permanently withstands high loads.

Lithium-iron phosphate battery 1 Charge times daily

Sightseeing Trains can operate as a subsidiary of Jagdschloss Express and Excursion Trips GmbH draw on many years of experience with small railways. “We now not only operate the railways, but also produce them ourselves. This means we can respond specifically to customer requirements. Because every route has its own challenges and we want it to be right for our customers in the long term,” says Stefan Krüger, describing the company’s philosophy.

“The electric locomotive is our favorite child at the moment. Everywhere we go with it, people are skeptical at first, but then excited after a short time.” This is due to the unique technology and high performance: the electric locomotive Lithium iron phosphate battery has a range of up to 150 km and offers high pulling power with a torque of 850 Nm under continuous load.

“You don't notice the great effort on the locomotive, it is silent on the way,” explains Stefan Krüger. “The maintenance of the electric locomotive compared to our conventional diesel engines is around 35 percent. Customers can therefore save up to two thirds of the costs.” The electric locomotive is also extremely easy to maintain: all you need to do is charge it overnight. The charging time when fully discharged is approx. 4 hours.

The overall clutch package consisting of technology and service price was convincing

The patented Roba-DS Disc pack clutch transmits the torque without play and extremely torsionally rigid and compensates for existing radial, axial and angular shaft misalignment. It ensures precise torque transmission and is robust, reliable and temperature-resistant. In addition, the shaft coupling is wear-free and therefore reduces the necessary maintenance effort to a minimum.

Compensating couplings for high temperatures

"We need a coupling here that is durable without any compromises and that can transmit high torques - especially at peaks," says Stefan Krüger, describing the requirements. “The axial compensation is also important; the clutch gets over manufacturing tolerances. With the Roba-DS, the overall package convinced us – in addition to the technology, service and price.”

Power density combined with freedom from play

Today there is also a high level of importance when it comes to clutches power density an important role. High power density means small outside diameters, reduced weight and low mass moments of inertia. This means that load changes can occur more quickly and the drive accelerates and decelerates in a shorter time.

Due to the lower mass to be accelerated The operating costs also decrease and the handling and assembly of the coupling is made easier. Small dimensions are also an advantage in compact machines where there is little installation space available. In addition, a compact and power-dense design also saves raw materials and materials when producing the coupling.

The disk pack couplings used are those specified in the catalog Nominal torques can be used without any restrictions. A reduction in the nominal torque due to displacement, load spectrum or balancing requirements is not necessary. The couplings are compact, power-dense and very small.

For suppliers who have to take displacements and alternating torques into account when dimensioning, a larger coupling often has to be selected for the same nominal torque and the same speed. The Roba-DS combines high power density at the same time absolute freedom of play. Because constructive details, such as the blasting of the slats and the use of specially shaped collar bushings, ensure a backlash-free power flow with a very good power flow density between the input and output.

The multi-plate clutch and its industrial applications

The lamella pack couplings transmit torques up to the nominal torque absolutely free of play and with a constant high torsional rigidity. The shaft shifts specified can be exhausted in sum to 100% without affecting the transferable torque.
